WELCOME! WELCOME! WELCOME

The new political party Lalyans Seselwa comes of age.

Welcome to Lalyans Seselwa. I call on every citizen of the Seychelles to welcome Parti Lalyans Seselwa and other political parties who have recently registered. This is the land of the Free. It is only by individuals exercising their freedoms that our Rights get engraved, never to be lost thus consolidating our democracy.

The more political parties there are the merrier! It is a safe guard for the people.—of course as long as they speak up and take part in elections! Unfortunately most of the 7 parties we now have will NOT be doing so, which really begs the question of their purpose.

The hate and derogatory comments around formation of more opposition parties and on FB these last few weeks has been very disturbing, especially as they mostly came from folks who claim to love freedom; from folks who claim to love democracy. Yet being the land of the free, we must also welcome such hate and derogatory comments as we must also welcome the freedom of the citizens to do what the hell they wish to – as long as these are legal and constitutional.

You have had your first official Press Conference. The people are all attentive to hear you.
Do not let the fact that you have been branded a traitor by 1 person detract you. You know who you are and we the people will make up our own opinion.

I suppose that the real work really starts now   —still warm and freshly baked. Manifestoes and memorandum are easy to download and produce. These, on themselves, have never told the electorate much about a party. You would not have spoken as yet but you would have, by your actions made some very clear statements, which you now definitely need to address if you wish to make any inroad into the political life as a political party and influence the Seychelles political landscape in any way.
Background: You would all be X-SPPF/PL privileged inner circle members who were in general honorably discharged after lengthy period of service or choose to leave because of personality clash (1 case). Meaning that none of you would have left or resigned from or distanced yourselves from your old masters on any matter of principal or policy. Not then and not since have any public statements been made by any of you against the policies and principals your X --SPPF/PL party. You would all have enjoyed your long privileged years, practically a life time, within the despotic government of SPPF/PL….

Yet today you claim to stand as an opposition. Opposed to exactly what? The policies and principals of SPPF/PL , principals and policies that you never ever once, over decades, lifted a finger against or raised a voice against. You give the impression that when you guys were in, all was fine, now that you out all is …..

Or Opposed to the leadership of SPPF/PL?

Can you please spell out and in no uncertain terms, and as a matter of urgency, exactly what your woes and bone of contention against James Michel and those against the SPPF/Pl are.
The political wind of the Seychelles is today dictated by the CHANGE the people want, (and not by what the political parties are offering). A presidential election process will invariably lead to having an elected president at the end of the process. The CHANGE the people seek includes (even if not exhaustively) having a new president and that too, not one from SPPF/PL. Your sudden presence on the political scene and just before an election and an opposition party leads one to understand that you do not approve the current options the people have,-- to choose one such person as their president from the crop of wanabees presidents that have surfaced thus far.

Please spell out what axe to grind you would have against all these existing opposition political parties (especially the SNP) and what axe to grind you would have against the leaders of these opposition parties (especially Rev. Wavel Ramkalawan) that not only would they, (especially Rev. Wavel) not be up to the task of being a president but you are the better choice.

Can you sell us anything that would make us believe in you? Your presence on the scene tells us you think you do. Well, we are all ears.

So far all is very interesting, but I suppose that you would like to know how you are doing thus far. If I may—not unlike an aggrieved partner in a very cosy relationship gone sour! Travail I la. Your work is cut out for you and is very much an uphill task.

MESSAGE FROM BISHOP FELIX PAUL; SEYCHELLES HISTORY

The first thing SPUP/SPPF/Parti Lepep did on seizing power on 5th June 1977 was to seize all the schools owned by the Catholic Church. James Michel was one of those who carried an AK47 on that day. Later lands belonging to the Catholic Church were seized without compensation! That's how good a Catholic Michel is.

The below message from the first Seychellois Catholic Bishop of Port Victoria, Felix Paul, was first published in 1991. Twenty four years later, it still remains highly relevant. Bishop Paul was a Seychellois who lived through the one party state and witnessed firsthand life at the time. He thought, acted and felt like a Seychellois. Since his retirement and subsequent death, the country is still to have another native Seychellois Catholic bishop.

Extracts from the message

"But does all this suffice to constitute democracy? To guarantee liberty? To speak of unity?
Are we not rather witnesses of certain tensions and divisions, a certain step backwards on the human level and contempt for the rights of man?

Families had to go into exile for political reasons. Citizens have disappeared. There have been assassinations, arbitrary imprisonments, rebellions, and attempts to overthrow the power. An atmosphere of fear has been established paralysing the free expression of the citizens. Men wish to participate in political life but they are prevented or are afraid of being victims of sanctions.
Isn’t it the proof that the totalitarian regime fostered by the one-party is not conformed to the legitimate aspirations of the population?"

For those interested the whole message is published below.

Church Democracy and respect for the rights of man
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Seychelles
1) The actual situation of our country, disturbed by the debate about the freedom of political choice and the establishment of democracy in Seychelles, cannot leave the church indifferent. In fact, she feels herself directly concerned, as always, when the Man's legitimate aspirations, his dignity and his fundamental rights are at stake. On that account i feel it my duty to speak out in order to enlighten the conscience of the faithful and to reply to the question out by numerous citizens of different allegiances, whether religious or cultural. I wish also to speak out because the church feels itself in solidarity with the whole community of Seychelles.

                                TO DEFEND MAN
2) There is no other reason for this statement but the sacred duty to defend man, his rights and his liberty. And so we are in line with the universal church, her social doctrine and the Second Vatican Council, but above all, the last encyclical of John Paul ll, ''Centesimus Annus".
In this last document, the Pope presents in fact, points for reflection which are fundamental for our church, but also for the whole civil and political society of our country.
Here then is the reflection which I propose for you all and which could help us to get over the present tense situation in country.

                              COLLAPSE OF THE SOCIALIST SYSTEM
3) The socialist system which derives from the Marxist principles has everywhere shown its inability to construct the new society envisaged a century ago.
Against the socialism which proclaims itself atheistic and which loses sight of the sense of common human dignity, the church has affirmed and continues to do so energetically that every man, whatever his personal convictions bears in himself God’s image and so deserves respect.(C.A. n.22)
Marxism, writes the Pope, pledged itself to root out from man’s heart the thirst for God, but the results have shown t to be impossible without disturbing the heart of man. (C.A.n.24)
The denial of God deprives a person of its roots, and so, encourages the reorganisation of the social order without taking account of the person’s dignity and responsibility. (C.A.n.13)
Furthermore the failure of socialism stands as a warning for all those, who in the name of political realism, wish to banish right and morality from politics. (C.A.n.25)

                   THE TOTALITARIAN REGIME’S ERROR
4) The totalitarian regime is the natural consequences of the Marxist system. The Encyclical Centesimus Annus, gives us a picture of this form of totalitarianism. We give it here while remarking that, it treats of the same form of the totalitarian state installed in Seychelles from 1977 to today. In the modern epoch has existed the totalitarianism which in its Marxist-Leninist form, considers that some man, on account of a deeper knowledge of the laws of development of society, or because of their particular class and of their nearness to the more living sources of the collective conscience, are exempt from error and so can arrogate to themselves the exercise of absolute power. (C.A.n.44)

           WHAT THE CHURCH AFFIRMS
5) The church rejects Marxism and every form of totalitarian regime. Therefore we firmly declare that
.every man has been created by God in his image
.every man has been created free
.every man should be respected in his rights and dignity.
That means that the church which carries on Christ’s Mission on earth, has the duty of defending Man, the visible image of the invisible God, while demanding of the Political Power, respect for his rights and liberties. “The rights of Man and his fundamental liberties are inherent in all human beings, inalienable and guaranteed by the law. The first responsibility of governments is to respect, preserve and observe them and to exercise them fully, given their basis in liberty, justice and peace”. (Charter of the European Community) it is only on this condition that one can truly speak of Liberty, Equality and Fraternity.
In a recent publication concerning Church-State relations, the Catholic Bishops of Vietnam, meeting at Hanoi from the 6th to the 12th April 1991, declared: “Always and everywhere people aspire to authentic democracy: that it has rights that has the possibility of giving its own opinion, that it be permitted to manifest its own convictions, that the rights of Man be respected”.                     (Episcopal Conference of Vietnam).

                                MAN AS AN INDIVIDUAL
Man as an individual has the rights to:
.freedom of thought, of conscience, and of religion,
.freedom of expression,
.freedom of association, and of peaceful assembly,
.freedom of movement.
No one shall be subject to arrest or arbitrary detention, to torture or to any other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment.
Every individual has the right to know his rights and have them appreciated; to participate in free and sincere elections; to be judged fairly and publicly if he is accused of a crime: to enjoy his economic, social and cultural rights.

                 MAN AS THE FAMILY
Man as a member of the family, has “ the right to life which forms an integral part of the right to grow in his mother’s womb after his conception, then the  right to live in a united family and a favourable climate for development of his personality; the right to develop his intelligence and his liberty by the search for knowledge and truth; the right to participate in the work of enhancing the goods of the earth and drawing from it his livelihood and that of his relatives; the right to freely found a family; to welcome and bring up children while exercising a responsible sexuality” (C.A.n.47)
“The parents have the first and inalienable right to educate their children…….. they should enjoy a true liberty in the choice of school”. (Council Vatican ll, Declaration on Christian Education, n.6)

              MAN IN SOCIETY
Man, as a member of society, has the right to live in a free community which respects all his rights. For that, “the church appreciates the democratic system, as the system which assures the participation of the citizens in political choices and guarantees the possibility of choosing and controlling their rulers or of replacing them in a peaceful way when that seems opportune”. (C.A.n.46)
At the basis of democracy is the right of all citizens of different opinions without discrimination to participate in the political life and the well-being of the country, whether in freely choosing its rulers or in freely seeking political responsibility. Therefore, democracy really exists in a country when it is shown in the presence of many political parties (Multiparty regime)

DEMOCRACY IN SEYCHELLES FUNDAMENTAL QUESTIONS
Here questions arise: are citizens rights in Seychelles actually respected? Have we true democracy in our country? True liberty?
Let us recognise first of all that our country has certainly made progress in the material domain as regards the standard of living. At the present our community has advantages in the provision of free health care for all; in old-age pensions; improved conditions in work; and effort has been made in the domain of housing. The youth can enjoy sports and the children have classes’ free and free meals.
But does all this suffice to constitute democracy? To guarantee liberty? To speak of unity?
Are we not rather witnesses of certain tensions and divisions, a certain step backwards on the human level and contempt for the rights of man?
Families had to go into exile for political reasons. Citizens have disappeared. There have been assassinations, arbitrary imprisonments, rebellions, and attempts to overthrow the power. An atmosphere of fear has been established paralysing the free expression of the citizens. Men wish to participate in political life but they are prevented or are afraid of being victims of sanctions.
Isn’t it the proof that the totalitarian regime fostered by the one-party is not conformed to the legitimate aspirations of the population?
Material progress is not enough. We must recall what the gospel says; “man does not live by bread alone”. Our country feels the lack of something more essential. It feels that there are values which one has sought to stifle; the liberties and fundamental rights of our society
In fact those who wish to express a political opinion contrary to that of the ruling power are automatically treated as serpents, racists or opportunists seeking their privileges or interests, as traitors or enemies of the people. That goes against true democracy and fundamental rights of man.

THE CHURCH IS SOLIDLY BEHIND LEGIMTIMATE ASPIRATIONS
7) The situation of dissatisfaction and anxiety manifests the aspiration of the people of Seychelles to become free again, to build its future in true democracy.
The church welcomes these legitimate aspirations of the people. She also remains attentive to the actual signs which favour the setting up of democracy in the country. On this subject we remark with satisfaction that ray of hope which came for the country in the president of the republic’s address on the 5th June. It is the question of a referendum. Although not recognizing the principle of the referendum, the church sees there are occasion for the expression of their aspirations for a democratic society where there would be a place for the opinions of different political parties. The prolonging of the actual system of one-party. Constitutes an affront to the way rights accrue to the citizens and it would keep the country in situations of injustice and tension.

APPEAL TO THE CONSCIENCE OF ALL
8) We represent these lines of reflections as an expression of our fidelity to the gospel, as love of the truth, as the defence of man to proclaim peace in freedom and to encourage the spiritual moral and material progress of our country.
We are confident of the sense of responsibility of those who rule the country that they may acknowledge that the church in Seychelles is at the service of man, that they may understand that the church’s only intention is to help to promote an irreversible process of democratization which will finally do them honour as rulers and would contribute to the stable welfare, spiritual and human of our people.
May God enlighten all of us church, citizens and rulers.
We ask the Immaculate Virgin Mary, Queen of Seychelles, to obtain for us the grace to be renewed by the Holy Spirit, in our hearts and in our will to choose what is best for Seychelles and to realise it in peace, love and liberty.

Yours devotedly
+FELIX PAUL
Bishop of Port-Victoria

JAMES MICHEL IN SEARCH OF A NEW CLOCK…AND INSPIRATION

“Human rights are not only violated by terrorism, repression or assassination, but also by unfair economic structures that creates huge inequalities” – Pope Francis

As I read about the President’s third visit to the Vatican with his usual large entourage to visit the Holy See, I fail to understand why President James Michel is still in “search of inspiration and wisdom” when he has visited the Vatican on two previous occasions. Were the previous Popes not wise or not forthcoming with inspirational thoughts, or is this not just another camouflaged visit in search of a photo opportunity with Pope Francis, following which President Michel can start manufacturing new clocks at taxpayers’ expense to donate to his own Parti Lepep flock of sheep before the election?

In search of inspiration and clocks
If indeed it is “inspiration and wisdom” that this globe-trotting, multi millionaire President seek, then as a devout and humble Catholic, I believe it is my duty to guide our President by reminding him of the 10 laws handed down to Moses on Mount Sinai by our Creator GOD. Those 10 commandments were gifted to mankind to show us how to live a better life and how to please our Lord forever, and when handed over, was accompanied by smoke, earthquakes and the blast of a trumpet to emphasize the importance of these laws. Moses recorded God’s words in Exodus 20:2-17. A reminder of some of the 10:

-You shall not murder.
-You shall not commit adultery.
-You shall not steal.
-You shall not bear false witness against your neighbour.
-You shall not covet your neighbour’s house; you shall not covet your neighbour’s wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbour’s.

As he seeks wisdom and inspiration and hopefully redemption as well, I would kindly ask the President to pay particular attention to those supreme laws.

FRENCH COUPLE LEAVES SEYCHELLES AMID DEATH THREATS

They moved to Seychelles because they had fallen in love with the country and wanted their nine year-old son to grow up here. But an argument with a neighbour on Praslin escalated into a situation fraught with danger and intimidation. Faced with the authorities’ reluctance to help and protect them, Carine and Alain Gagneux left Seychelles for good on 16 April. This is their story.

Carine and Alain Gagneux have been coming to Seychelles for the past 22 years. Over the years, the French couple had developed an attachment to Seychelles but more particularly to Praslin, where they go every time they visit the country. The couple’s nine year-old son practically grew up here. The young family speaks and understands Creole, has many Seychellois friends and every year when the time to leave Seychelles comes, they find that they are more and more reluctant to go back “home”.

So they decided to take the leap they have been dreaming of for years by making a permanent move to Seychelles. In March, they arrived in Seychelles with big hopes packed in their suitcases. They rented out a house at Anse Kerlan, Praslin. They didn’t know the area particularly well, having stayed at Grand Anse, Mont Plaisir and Ste Anne during their previous visits.

On 18 March, they moved into their new house and began procedures to start a business there, hoping that their investment would allow them to apply for a residence permit. On Saturday 4 April, their neighbour and two of his friends walked onto their land and started throwing cut grass and dead plants onto the lawn. When Alain Gagneux asked what the act of aggression was about, the three men started insulting Mr Gagneux, accusing him of dumping the dead plants on his property.

What should have been a civilized conversation among neighbours turned into a heated discussion complete with death threats and xenophobic remarks. The couple insisted that they did not dump anything in their neighbour’s garden but still promised to have it cleaned, in the name of keeping the peace.

Except that the men would not calm down. Instead, according to the couple, they left with a chilling threat: “In three days, you will leave Seychelles in tears. You will cry. You will cry”. The next day, the men came back with a machete. When Mrs Cagneux told them that the gardener would arrive shortly, one of the men shows his machete to the French woman before making obscene remarks. Scared, the couple decided to call the police. When the law enforcement officers arrived on the scene,  they called the neighbours in an attempt to reconcile the two parties But it all went frightfully wrong for the couple who found themselves accused of threatening their neighbours! When Mrs Gagneux told the police that she had been threatened with a machete, the neighbours denied that a weapon had been used to threaten Gagneux couple. And the police chose to believe the neighbours. When Mrs Gagneux told the authorities that she had photos to prove her claims, the police made her delete the evidence.

The Gagneux’s neighbour’s machete is clearly visible.
The days that followed were, according to the French couple, “a nightmare”. They were forced to leave their house and seek refuge in a hotel. The police, they say, refused to take them seriously and every time they made a trip back to the house, fresh threats were made by the neighbours. At some point, the couple, tired of being afraid and anxious that the situation would prove too traumatic to their child, decided that righteous anger would be a more effective weapon. So they decided to go back to the house they had rented for five years. One night there was enough, Carine Gagneux stated. They had to barricade themselves in the house because the neighbours kept walking up to the house to scare them.

The next morning, they left never to return. But they faced a dilemma : should they leave Praslin and Seychelles or alert the authorities? They decided to go for the latter. Emails were sent and phone calls were made to the ministry of Tourism, the ministry of Foreign Affairs, the ministry of Home Affairs as well as to the French embassy. Contacts were made with newspapers. But somehow, according to the Gagneux, no one came to their help.

On 16 April, exhausted by the tension and disillusioned by their experience, the French family left Seychelles for good. Asked by email what their future projects are, they say “to never come back to Seychelles. The threats were real and we could tell this wasn’t something that was going to go away. We were left defenseless, we realised that we couldn’t count on the protection of the police since they already told us there was no case against the people who threatened us. We had to leave because we cannot accept to live without justice.

Our nine year old son has suffered enormously from the situation”, the couple said. They also claim that the men who had threatened them “are known on Praslin for terrorizing people, especially foreigners and this is why the police are not doing anything. They too, are scared of them”. In a letter sent to the President of the Republic after their departure from Seychelles, the Gagneux couple said that, “we have come to a bitter realization – that this country, once so peaceful, is falling prey to alcoholism, drug abuse and violence. This country where one could sleep with the windows open, where people used to smile, where racism didn’t exist, where people were proud to be Seychellois. We would so have loved to become Seychellois and we would have been proud of it”.

FAKE TERROR IN SEYCHELLES; WHO BENEFITS?

Did President James Michel through Minister of Tourism, Alain St Ange,  orchestrate a fake terror plot by using the Carnival de Victoria to further their political agenda as their party`s popularity has completely crumbled? This is an old trick pulled by Governments around the world when popularity has collapsed; spread the fear and get the people to submit their rights to the government.  After all James Michel is an expert in fear mongering as was witnessed during the coup d’état of 1977 and under the one party state era that followed.

It is alleged that St Ange together with the aid of ETurbonews.com released an article on Saturday April 25th claiming that “Seychelles authorities acted on an attempt to destabilize the country at today's carnival”. The article is still up on the website contrary to some claims. It has to be remembered STB PR and Marketing department have had very close links with ETurbonews for many years. It is apparent that STB pay a subscription to Eturbonews to push their press releases to Eturbonews worldwide audience.  Would this article have been released without prior knowledge from St Ange?

ST ANGE ACTING THE PART ON SBC NEWS?

Twenty four hours later Eturbonews released another alleged sanctioned article titled “The president is attending: Seychelles shows resilience at the Carnival”.  This would have the effect of the President looking like a hero and boosting his crumbled popularity; a stage managed and manufactured show.

Michel strolling around carefree on the final day of the Carnival
This was their final chance on a mass scale to spread fear amongst the Seychellois people before the upcoming elections; it has backfired and failed miserably. The Seychellois people must now turn around and show their discontent and vote out James Michel at the upcoming elections; Seychellois are fed up of being taken for a ride.

I LOVE SEYCHELLES! SYLVESTRE RADEGONDE

I love my country just as much as any Seychellois and we all want the best for our beloved little islands. I do not need the President to tell me how I should express that love nor do I need him to impose his personal definition of patriotism on me. I do not need a national campaign and posters on every lamp post to remind me to love Seychelles! Let’s stop the circus and focus our energy and limited resources on addressing the real issues that our people and our country are facing.

I immigrated to England immediately after the 2006 presidential elections. I keep in touch with friends and family and I visit as often as I can. Through the online media, I follow what is going on. I must say that I’m dismayed at what I hear and read about and was even more depressed at what I saw when I returned home last December. How have we got there? Where did we go wrong? How have we allowed drugs and prostitution to get so out of control that we now need a national campaign - another one – to try and stem them out? How have we allowed our police service to fall into so much decay that people no longer feel safe in their homes? How can government pretend that the world is listening to little Seychelles when the leadership and government appear to be deaf to the voices of their own people; are oblivious  to our ever crumbling health service and education system; the ever widening social divide; the inadequacy of support for our youth and the hardship of so many people? I can list dozens of possible reasons for the mess the country is in today but they all ultimately boil down to politics, greed and the absence of leadership.

The disease that we contracted with the coup d’etat in 1977 is still alive and as strong as ever today as it was in the 70’s and 80’s: Politics. It’s gangrenous and permeates our daily lives. Everything in our little country ends up having a political connotation. If you complain about the weather, you’re bound to find somebody who sees it as a criticism of government. I suppose it’s because the Parti Lepep government wants us to believe that it’s thanks to them that it rains or shines! You have to prove your unreserved allegiance to the Party to get a job, a promotion, to get a government-funded house, an overseas scholarship or a small loan to start your business. The government’s influence even extends to employment in the private sector, as I personally found out in 2006 when I dared to stick my neck out in support of SNP. The situation is so bad that people with little or no other option are forced to resort to “zwe rol” just to get by. The very sad thing is that even part of the local business community have also ended up zwe rol “to protect my business”. The result is that people are employed and promoted, at times into very senior positions, not because of their qualifications, knowledge or competence but because of their political colours. Then we wonder why government service is dysfunctional, incompetent and staff morale is so low and why certain government ministries struggle to recruit and retain staff.

A new government will need to rectify this situation from day one. Politics have no place in the public service as it’s not government’s business to interfere in a private company’s recruitment process. Applicants for a job in the public service should be assessed solely on the requirements of the position applied for. The same should apply for promotions, which in my view, should be assessed by a panel. People applying for government-funded housing and any other service should be assessed according to their needs. There should be a place for everyone who wants to bring their contribution to the development of our country, regardless of their political or religious affiliations. Government needs to show proof of this through concrete actions.

There should be place under the sun for all of us. Our country is full of too many wasted talents. As far as I’m personally concerned, I would rather put my knowledge and experience at the service of my country rather than being in a foreign country, working for a foreign company, however great the company may be.

WHAT IS LIONNET DOING?

Government policy is that only residential houses can be constructed on land bank properties.

The residents of St Roch Estate, Au Cap, set up a petition a month ago to ask that the construction of flats and villas at Upper St Roch Estate by a contractor be stopped. We wanted to remind government about its policies concerning constructions on land from the land bank. But, to our surprise, two days later the District Administrator came to visit the site and informed the residents present that she can’t do anything as construction had already started. An adviser of the ministry of Land Use and Habitat also visited a few days later. To our surprise, he told us that the owner will continue with the construction and that we should not interfere as the owner can do whatever he wants; even construct a hotel if he wants.

Just to inform the people of Seychelles, the said contractor built up a high rock retaining wall without planning approval and it was only after completion that officers of the Planning Authority came to visit and approve the plan onsite. The residents of the Upper St Roch Estate are very upset with the situation especially with the comments made by the representative of the MLUH. The Indian workers on the site are also using river water for their bath, etc., the same water that the residents use for drinking and for other domestic uses. Note that there isn’t any treated water in this area. The estate’s residents have been calling on government for over ten years to address the water situation in vain.

SEYCHELLES MINISTER OF LAND LIONNET ABUSING HIS POWERS

V17925 is 1955 square meters and has been transferred to the stepson of Glenn Savy for only SR226,000. Dupouy is the son of a Mauritian woman Glenny Savy is now married to; this guy is a Mauritian who came to Seychelles because Glenny married his mother. It seems he is now Seychellois by naturalisation. This is fine, but how can Dupouy get a prime piece of land  in the Morne National Park, when thousands  of Seychellois have been waiting forever to be allocated a piece of land on which to build their house?

Why was V17925 not put on tender to provide all Seychellois with the same opportunity to purchase this plot of prime property? Why was the sale of V17925 not gazetted? This is favouritism at its worse from President Michel. And who has given planning permission to Glennys stepson to build in the national park? The people want to know.

Christian Lionnet now the Seychelles Minister for land and planning was at the thick of the action. He signed on behalf of the Government to give away Seychellois land to a person who does not deserve it. This transaction is totally underhand done between friends behind closed doors. President Michel is tolerant to these types of corruption; in fact he loves it.

SEYCHELLOIS HERO; THE LAST MOMENTS

“They may kill me but they will never kill the idea of freedom” – Gerard C Hoarau

On a cold winter’s day on 29th of November 1985, Gerard Hoarau the exiled head of the MPR and President of the SNM was walking home from visiting his doctor on the relatively quiet streets of Edgware in London. He was on his own and probably deep in thought. On his shoulders lay the hope and aspirations for freedom of the Seychellois nation.

He was just about to put the key into the lock of his door to go in when ...a cowardly assassin suddenly opened fire from behind emptying thirty two bullets from a sterling sub machine gun into his body with a few smashing into the front door of the house shattering the windows and wooden frame. Gerard crumpled to the floor under the hail of bullets as the assassin melted away never to be seen again.

Andre Laporte his close friend with whose family Gerard shared a house, came out in a state of shock to see Gerard lying on the door step in a pool of blood. He bent down on his knees and tenderly held Gerard’s head in his hands. As Gerard gurgled and fought for breath, Andre urged his dear friend to hold on as he tried to reassure him that the ambulance was on its way. Gerard, his pained eyes wide open but unable to speak, blood pouring out from his multiple bullet wounds; the bridge of his nose shattered by one of the bullets; looked up at his friend and from the corner of his big blue eyes, tears started streaming down the blood soaked cheeks of his face. “It was as if he was trying to speak with his eyes”, Andre recalls as he describes the scene that he says will haunt him for the rest of his life. Gerard’s favourite thick, dark green corduroy coat, a present from his mother and father was completely blood soaked and literally shredded to threads by all the bullets that had peppered his body.

Minutes later Gerard was taken away in an ambulance still fighting for his life. The bullet that eventually killed him had entered in the back of his neck exiting through his nose.

On that fateful day, a peoples’ hero; a cherished son and brother was brutally murdered by cowards, but a martyr and a legend was born. In his own small way Gerard has joined an august band of martyrs such as Mahatma Ghandi, Martin Luther-King, and John F Kennedy not forgetting his own martyred Seychellois countrymen, Hassan, Simon, Mike, Alton, Son, Jean, Bernard, Tony, Michel, Gilbert.... Today their stars shine brighter than ever in the skies of the Seychelles.

JAMES MICHEL SAYS HE LOVES SEYCHELLES; LET`S SEE!

“I Love Seychelles” declared President James Michel .The Seychellois Head of State announced the theme which he has described as “patriotic” in his New Year message.“The theme for the year encapsulates all that is dear to us as a nation. Always united, standing together, and working for the same objective, for greater success. This theme will inspire and motivate us to do even more -- and better -- for our Seychelles…….”said Michel

“…..Seychelles is our homeland. It is our cradle. I call on all Seychellois, in every family, in every community, in every school, all of religious beliefs, in every voluntary organization, in every field of work, in every business, in every political party, to love and protect our Seychelles,” further stated the President.

This is just a farce and political propaganda; do not fall for it. A simple illustration of James Michel favouring foreigners over Seychellois can be seen in the Seychelles Airlines saga. The President does not care about Seychelles and Seychellois. He works hard blocking Seychellois and promoting foreigners instead; Bank of Ceylon versus a local bank and Mihin Lanka versus Seychelles Airlines are some examples that come to mind.

The name Seychelles Airlines, Seychellois owned, was maliciously and unjustly cancelled by registrar whereas Seychelles Airways owned by a foreigner is allowed to keep its registered name. This President does not love Seychellois and Seychelles.

It is clear he is bent on keeping power. It's bad news for serious Seychellois entrepreneurs and all those who believe in bringing greater national wealth, freedom of expression and real collectively driven change. The people of Seychelles must therefore vote him out.

CAP TERNAY STILL ON; LEASE NOT CANCELLED

The refusal of the tourism project has been deferred pending the result of the forthcoming elections; not refused as many have been conned to believe. This is confirmed by insiders that show that the 99 year lease, of many parcels and thousands of acres of the peoples land has not been cancelled. A new project is expected to be submitted by the Emirates Group after the election.

Both the Public relations department and Sir Tim Clark, President of the Emirates group, were contacted and both refused to deny the total termination of the project by keeping completely silent on the matter. In addition there has not been any official press release by the Emirates Group announcing the the termination of the project and there will never be; as another project will be submitted in the future.

The government indicates that it is their policy to only ever sell or lease one plot of land to a person or entity. Christian Lionnet, then the Principal Secretary and never elected by the people leased 17 parcels of almost one quarter of a million square meters of prime land to one company at $365,000 per year; totally robbing the Seychellois people as it is far below fair market price. James Michel will do and say anything to stay in power as all the past corruptions will be exposed; the very reason the people must vote him out.

The palace on the mountain was refused by Planning Authority but was approved by cabinet with the lobbyist being the President. Many other developments have been implemented using the same strategy. It is imminent history will repeat itself; we will be told there was a revision by the developer.

In the face of defeat in the coming elections, the President will try to blow at every feather.

MISS SEYCHELLES 2015… IS THERE A SECRET??

The Seychelles beauty pageant is a much awaited event by the public where a queen is selected to represent the country at the Miss World event. Throughout the years, the pageant has faced challenges. After the coup d’Etat, it was banned. It was said that it was vulgar to publicly expose women as it lowers their dignity. However, few years ago the pageant took off again and now has the approval of the same government.

Since the launching of the pageant earlier this year, there has not been the usual publicity surrounding the event. However, there seems to be a lot happening out of sight. One contestant has expressed her dismay at the happenings from within. She alleges that there will not be the swimwear section of the pageant because the main sponsor of the event has ordered it to be so due to his religious beliefs.

On attempting to confirm the same from other contestants, it was revealed that they are prevented from commenting. The contestants have made it known that they have signed an agreement of secrecy with the organisers, the STB. Violation of the agreement will involve paying a fine to the STB with the possibility of being barred from participating in the pageant.

Whether the contestants will be barred from wearing bikinis on stage or not will become obvious on the night of the 30th May at the main event. However, the STB need to shed light on these allegations and offer a public explanation as to why the contestants need to enter into agreements of secrecy for an event of national importance or is there a secret we need not know about?

THE SAGA OF JAMES MANCHAM; THE ULTIMATE TRAITOR

I've said this before; Mancham has been betraying us for a long time. There are a number of indicators that suggest he had his deal a long long time ago... and really how far back, and what his role really is, I'm not sure if we'll ever find out the whole truth... and whether we'll ever find out who James Macham really is... He certainly is not the person he made us believe he was... He's always lying and all along he's subtly changing his story.

Every time there's been an important event with regards to the political situation in Seychelles, he's jumped in and intervened, appearing to be taking control of the situation in favour of those who oppose Rene, and when everyone stepped aside, (since he was trusted as the leader)and allowed him to deal with it, when he'd got control of the issue he'd give us in straight to Rene's lot, and betray us, then he'd come on the media and tell us a pack of lies to cover his tracks. He's been doing this since early 1980's and word was getting around since as far back then, that he's a traitor, and that he was frequently on the phone with Rene, but it was hard for most to believe this could be true.

If you observe a few events (and I'm sure there are many more which we will come to recall) you will find that they point us only one thing; Betrayal. First if I may mention there was a letter written by Ralph Hoarau, Gerard Hoarau's younger brother, in which he wrote that as far back in the 1980's they went to see James Mancham at his home in Putney, West London, to ask him to lead the opposition in exile, after Gerard had been murdered; Mancham refused. Then later in the early 1990's before Mancham and some of the exiles returned to Seychelles, (at the time back in Seychelles the Rene regime had nearly collapsed, Rene was on the back foot, the economy in tatters, as a result of his activities with the communists and the belief of his involvement in the murder of Gerard Hoarau in London, and his involvement with mafia gang lords, such as Mario Ricci, money laundering and communism was collapsing). Mancham was warned and was offered the opportunity to set conditions that would facilitate the surrender of the Rene government, he was offered help, but Mancham refused and packed his bags got on the plane went straight back to Seychelles without having set the required conditions for the return of multi-party. He refused support from very high places.

Mancham addressing a political rally in Victoria - 1992

When he arrived in Seychelles on Palm Sunday in April 1992, (emulating Jesus Christ's triumphal entry into Jerusalem) it felt as if nearly the whole country was there to meet him, but he had very little to say that was of significance to most people, but what seemed to be his highest priority, and was most memorable and utterly disappointing, was he wanted to go and have a swim at Beau Vallon...( after all that happened to his followers the previous years, that's all he could come up with). He gave people the belief that he was coming to revive the opposition that many had fought for and died for; but really he knew all along he was coming to further strengthen and give legitimacy to the Rene regime. In fact, he saved Rene's regime that time, (but how many times before has he saved Rene?

What role has he played in the demise of his own "friends" who were trying to remove Rene?). Once at the Democratic Party rally, at Anse Boileau, a few months after he had returned to Seychelles, It was a huge rally and many people attended, but Mancham did not turn up and instead he sent the late Mr Philippe Moulinie, better known as "Paren", to tell his supporters that James Mancham, hadn't turned up because he had gone to have a "loperation lerni" (he'd gone for surgery on his hernia). Little did the people know that all he meant was, "y pe donn zot grenn". If he was serious about reviving his party, having been in exile for so long and in view of all that happened to his supporters under this regime, and if he cared about anyone other than himself, would he not have been there at every rally and actively promoting and raising the moral of his supporters and proactively trying to win the election.

The traitor and the coup plotter

If you think about it, if he did not want to be in politics any more, why did he revive the democratic party again, making people who did not really support Rene, but who were working with him, expose themselves, then only to play it down and effectively kill the Democratic Party. Where is the Democratic Party now...? The reason is very obvious; he wanted to destroy the opposition in Seychelles. His role was to convince the world that everything is ok in Seychelles now. All his apparent participation in the opposition, he was just acting, hijacking the role of opposition so he could once again, deceive the opposition and give favour to the regime.

Another event that gave him away, during the announcement of the result of the first elections after his return, all the leaders were gathered for the announcement, and it was live on SBC, someone from the opposition had uttered something along the lines of fairness, and Mancham replied to one of the opposition leaders the words "kisa ou le vinn fer desord dan sa peyi"; In front of Albert Rene, in a way to impress Rene. Mancham had not returned to Seychelles to help the opposition but to destroy it. It is clear he had his deal long before he landed in Seychelles. I am sure many people have observed these and other occasions that indicate Mancham has long been betraying his supporters. If I remember well, once in one of Albert Rene's angry speeches, back in the 1980's, he predicted something along the lines, "one day Mancham would be more SPPF than anyone expected", and to give credit where credit is due, this one's for you Albert Rene, my friend, you were right. Mancham is the main reason why Rene's regime survived all that it has survived. People should not be fooled by anything Mancham has to say anymore. Furthermore, recently, in an interview with John Denis, on Seselwa Annou Koze, Mancham said that he'd long been retired from politics. So what is he doing now?

WHERE WILL THE NEW PRESIDENT STAY?

Michel’s services are no longer required; that is abundantly clear. The prerogative to determine the date of the elections remains his; his last call. His lieutenants shall mobilise and fight the halfhearted battle and lose spectacularly. During the years Michel has been in office, the country has been managed like a day care center. When he leaves, toys will be left scattered around and adults will have to put the place back in order; it will be a monumental task for his successor but where will he sleep?

Michel has run this country as though he was going to be president for life. He has failed to put in place the proper infrastructures to sustain the organs of state. There is no official residence of the head of state and head of government. The State House used to be the official residence of the head of state and government but he has turned it into a block of offices; he has yet to make the difference between a house and an office. The man has used the place for everything else except for the purpose for which it was designed. State House has metamorphosed from being a house to art gallery, a theatre, a funeral parlour and Lepep’s political headquarter.

Michel transferred state land onto his name on which is located his enclave. A unit of the defence forces was relocated to offer him close protection. The ‘Tazar’ elite unit was created under the guise of combating piracy and located up the hills of Sans Souci in a national park to protect Michel.

Handing over power will be a very confusing affair. The Presidential guards have a duty to offer close security to all elected presidents; how will the transition take place under present circumstances? It will certainly cost the people of Seychelles some millions more before the office of the President becomes more civilized; money the country can ill afford to spend.

MARCO FRANCIS AND CLIFFORD ANDRE TO FACE OFF IN SCCI ELECTION

The Seychelles Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) has published the list of candidates for its coming election to be held during next week's Annual General Meeting (AGM).The SCCI has circulated the final list of 42 nominations for the post of Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson, Treasurer and Councillors. Dolor Ernesta is standing as Mr. Francis deputy whilst Ahmed Afif is deputising for Mr. Andre. The election will be held on Thursday 26th.

The battle for the chairmanship of the SCCI is usually played behind closed doors. Not this time. The contenders have taken their campaigns to the Internet.

Marco Francis

While the country in general is focused on the run-in to the presidential elections which could well be held this year, another election campaign is being contested, to represent the business community this time. And, for the most part, the battle is being fought in cyberspace.

The Seychelles Chamber of Commerce and Industries (SCCI) is the body which regroups the private sector in Seychelles, although all businesses are members. It acts as an interface between businesses and the State with the aim of promoting economic growth and wealth creation, but its primary concern is of course advancing the agenda of the private sector which drives the economy.

The SCCI Constitution, amended about four years ago, provides for the election of a chairman and councilors who hold office for a period of two years. Currently Marco Francis, who operates mainly in the offshore sector, is heading the chamber and his term will expire at the end of this month.

A candidate can run for election as chairman of the chamber and serve for three consecutive terms. This year, two teams who have confirmed their intention to field candidates for the chairmanship as well as for the posts of councilors.

This includes the incumbent Marco Francis and his group, who are now being challenged by a team led by former Member of National Assembly (MNA) and councilor, Clifford André. Mr André has been councilor for two consecutive terms although he is reported as having being absent for most of the latter one. Another councilor from the current SCCI council, Peter Roselie, also appears to have changed loyalties and now forms part of the team challenging Marco Francis.

Meanwhile Mr Francis has confirmed that Mr André has already submitted his candidacy and that of his team to the SCCI headquarters. The battle to run the SCCI is usually a drama which is played behind the scenes and into which the general public does not get much insight.

Clifford Andre

But not this time as the contenders have taken their campaigns to the internet. While Peter Roselie has himself gone online to criticize the incumbent council, going as far as name calling both the current group running the council, of which he was part until a few weeks ago, it is businessman and former Democratic Party (DP) MNA Christopher Gill who is leading the online assault on the challenging team.

Christopher Gill, who last year won an award during the second edition of the Seychelles Business Awards, is a politician who crossed the floor from the opposition to join forces with the majority party in the National Assembly when he was the DP’s sole representative in Parliament. He then remained fairly quiet for a couple of years before becoming politically active again through a movement which did not fulfill the requirements of the Commissioner of Elections to participate in the last general elections in 2011.

Peter Roselie who is an accountant by profession, appears to have fallen out with the current Council and has thrown his lot in with Clifford André who is said to have issues with the leadership style of Marco Francis. The latter is basing his campaign on the achievements of his first term, which he says includes the opening up of frank dialogue between the government and initiating Seychelles’ first ever Business Awards which is now an annual event. He also points to his insistence that businesses retain their sense of commitment to the community.

BAIE TERNAY MARINE NATIONAL PARK THREATENED BY THE EMIRATES CAP TERNAY RESORT

Letter to the Editor From Citizens Engagement Platform Seychelles

Dear Editor,

The future survival of Baie Ternay Marine National park is under threat from extensive damage by dredging, if the Emirates Cap Ternay Resort and Spa is allowed to proceed with plans to dredge 134 260 cubic metres in this delicate marine eco-system.

The Baie Ternay Marine National Park was declared a National Park in 1979, because of “the unique biodiversity of its underwater life” as declared in a scientific paper presented by G Domingue, R Payet and N Shah at the time. Since then a number of scientific research projects and monitoring programmes have revealed that the Baie Ternay reef has become one of the most resilient carbonate reefs of the inner granitic islands of Seychelles.

A study carried out in 1996 by the Tropical Marine Research Unit of the University of York (UK) recorded 69 different species of coral in the Baie Ternay Marine Park. While many of those were affected by the mass coral bleaching events of 1998, further studies undertaken since then, mainly through the Shoals of Capricorn Programme (2000–2004), have indicated that the Baie Ternay reef has shown the fastest rate of coral recovery overall.

This was confirmed in the final World Bank (2000–2004) report of the Seychelles Ecosystem and Management Project, which found Baie Ternay to be one of three areas with the highest coral diversity in the entire Inner Islands of Seychelles, and it had the highest diversity in the western half of the group. According to the latest reports of the Marine Conservation Expedition of Global Vision International (GVI), in addition to a high diversity of types of coral, the percentage cover for the coral reef within the centre of the Baie Ternay Marine National Park has recovered to approximately 60% as of 2013. This is the highest level of recovery of any coral reef along the northwest coast of Mahé, monitored as part of the GVI /Seychelles coral reef monitoring programme.

As the reef regains its health the marine life of Baie Ternay is also flourishing. Research and acoustic tracking studies carried out by the Seychelles National Park Authority (SNPA) and the Marine Conservation Society, Seychelles (MCSS) in 2011 have shown that the bay is an extremely important habitat for a number of species of the shark and ray family. In particular it is a pupping and nursery ground for Lemon Sharks – listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. The area is also an important foraging and resting area for various species of sting ray.

Another critically endangered species (as listed on the IUCN Red List) found in increasing numbers in Baie Ternay is the hawksbill turtle. The SNPA/ MCSS research of 2011 showed that the near shore reef areas of Baie Ternay are critically important habitats for foraging juvenile Hawksbill Turtles. The GVI Seychelles – Mahé Report Series No. 142 (2013 – 2014) also confirms the gradual increase in the number of hawksbill and green turtle sightings in the Baie Ternay Marine Park from 2005 to the present.

While approximately 18 hawksbill and 5 green turtles were sighted on average in 2005, by 2013 the number of hawksbill turtles sighted had risen to about 40 and green turtles to about 15. The report concludes that this further underscores the need to develop and maintain conservation strategies that address the impacts that threaten this region.

It is therefore of grave concern that the Cap Ternay hotel project being proposed by Emirates Hotels Ltd is planning to dredge 134 260 cubic metres of this very same reef and bay. This is equivalent to dredging a space the size of nine football fields, at three metres deep – well over half the bay. The extensive coral destruction, silting, sedimentation and water turbidity that will result will inevitably lead to irreversible long-term damage to these healthy but fragile marine habitats and ecosystems, which for obviously very sound reasons, we have been preserving for the past 35 years.

CAP TERNAY RAPED

The developers of the Cap Ternay hotel development, the Emirates Group, have commenced operations within the national park. Recently a small excavator entered the site with a view to start excavation of the wetlands. As fate would have it, the excavator got stuck in the mud and had to be retrieved; it was later removed from the site. Information suggests that dredging of the bay will start within the next month. Residents of the district are not amused at the recent developments; furious that their views had not been taken into consideration. The meeting held as part of the scoping exercise had been just a bluff.

There is also reliable information that a local company is bringing in a huge landing craft that will transport construction material to Cap Ternay by sea. Unconfirmed reports also indicate that the same craft will be transporting materials for the Grand Police project. It is alleged that the craft baptized as ‘Ton Jo’ will arrive in port shortly; the same company has also invested in the most modern piling equipment for the two projects.

This contemptuous attitude of government is sickening. James Michel’s commitment to stay connected to the people remains rhetoric.

CAP TERNAY; MICHEL’S DISRESPECT FOR THE SEYCHELLOIS PEOPLE

The hotel project by the Emirates Group at Cap Ternay is set to take off with engineers and contractors in final preparations to move in. We are well informed that it is just a matter of time before dredging works start to create a pass for the landing heavy machinery and construction materials. This contemptuous act by government towards the people of Seychelles is unacceptable. The public meeting held at Port Glaud as part of the scoping exercise for the EIA (Environmental Impact Assessment) late last year was just a diversion; government’s intention was clear. The project would go ahead irrespective of whether the citizens approved of it or not; their concerns were irrelevant.

Following the public meeting at Port Glaud, a consultant for the project expressed his surprise at the objections raised during the meeting; government officials had misled them into believing that the whole population was behind the project. He made no effort to hide his disgust and disappointment of the difficult situation in which he found himself.

Cap Ternay remains a national park and as such should have never been even considered for a hotel development of that magnitude. It could, however, have been tendered and locals given the opportunity to tap into the tourism industry. The site was offered to the Emirates Group.

It is inconceivable that the government has decided to make a national park private. Access to beaches in Seychelles is limited due to hotel developments; the disgust of the locals is very tangible. Access to Cap Ternay Beach is denied except via the sea, but another question needs an answer. Who can deny the Seychellois and tourists access to the national parks and the wetlands?

As it stands, Cap Ternay remains inaccessible to locals and foreigners alike unless a boat is hired; alternatively, permission has to come from Dubai. For our government to allow a huge tract of our national park to be turned into private property belonging to a foreigner is tantamount to treason.

The government under James Michel has lost all the respect of the population and the international community for their heinous decision to allow Cap Ternay to be raped but this is only the start of a long story.
